WellStar Paulding Hospital is among the first in the country to be conditioned solely by a geothermal heat pump and a radiant floor system. That posed a major site logistics challenge for Brasfield & Gorrie throughout the six-month construction period for the geothermal well field, which took up more than 50% of the site area normally used for laydown and staging. Also, each of the 209 drilled wells created about 9,000 gallons of water that had to be managed on site. Overall, the $94-million project included construction of an eight-story, 295,700-sq-ft hospital and erection of a 120,000-sq-ft precast parking deck. To meet the aggressive schedule, the contractor started construction six months before construction documents were finalized. And though the site experienced about 60 in. of rain over a seven-month period, crews completed the work on schedule.
