This project included a new treatment plant and modified existing facilities to increase their capacity to 23 million gallons per day. While potholing in preparation for the chlorine contact basin, crews discovered that the existing utility drawings were incorrect. The fix required moving the structure and redesigning the piping.
The team then conducted investigative potholing to find a new location for the structure and verify the piping routes. Ultimately, the change in location allowed construction at a reasonable cost while avoiding existing electrical duct banks, utilities, underground piping, force mains and gravity sewer lines.
A crew member also suggested using floating platforms while installing piping in the bioreactor tank. They proved to be safer, quicker and less costly than the traditional method of draining the water in the tank and using ladders or scissor lifts to complete the work 18 ft to 20 ft in the air.
