The U.S. 36 Mile Point 8 project near Estes Park rerouted the Little Thompson River from alongside the highway back to its original alignment passing under U.S. 36 through Muggins Gulch. Flatiron Constructors built this complex flood repair project for CDOT to prevent future flood damage to the highway. Work occurred near Rocky Mountain National Park during a season in which two of the largest wildfires in Colorado history threatened the area. The river relocation included construction of two large culverts under U.S. 36—a 214-linear-ft, 11-ft-dia tunnel and 66 linear ft of 14-ft-wide by 10-ft-tall precast concrete box culvert. The box culvert was installed during a full closure of U.S. 36 that allowed limited access on a temporary construction road for residents, school buses and first responders. CDOT planned the closure to last 30 days; however, Flatiron completed and reopened the road 10 days ahead of schedule.
