The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to clean up a nuclear waste dump in Parks Township. From 1961 to 1970, 33,000 cu yd of radioactive and non-radioactive wastes from the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. were buried in trenches on a 44-acre site known as the Shallow Land Disposal Area. BWX Technologies is the current owner of the site. Excavation is expected to start in 2024 and take four years. Monitoring wells show no migration of nuclear contaminants from the site. At the end of the cleanup the site will be turned over to BWXT and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for decommissioning. Jacobs Technology has been selected as the remediation contractor and will work with eight subcontractors. The project is valued at $500 million.
