In a major milestone for cancer research in the Southwest,Banner MD Anderson Cancer Centerrecently opened a new investigational cancer therapeutics research unit on the Banner Gateway Medical Center campus in Gilbert, Ariz.
The highly specialized unit will benefit cancer patients who are enrolled in early therapeutic trials that require close monitoring during treatments. It also expands the center’s capacity for conducting innovative clinical research.
The project team created the 2,852-sq-ft unit in an existing shelled area at Banner MD Anderson. Construction, led by McCarthy Building Cos., included infusion bays, space for phlebotomy and tissue sample collection and processing, exam rooms, a minor procedure room and administration and support space.

Mortenson, in partnership with the city of Tempe,Urban Development Partners, PGIM Real Estateand others celebrated the Feb. 10 topping out of The Beam on Farmer. The five-story, 184,000-sq-ft office building, located in downtown Tempe, Ariz., is the first in the state to feature exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction as the primary structural system. The CLT process utilizes young trees and combines layers of natural timber for an eco-friendly building approach with zero waste. Once the wood is installed, the building will sequester almost 2,600 metric tons of carbon. Scrap material from CLT production also is used to create biofuel or other products. The structure includes 194 CLT columns; 1,170 CLT beams; and 893 CLT decks, weighing in at more than 4.5 million lb. The interior will feature 13-ft-high exposed wood ceilings and 40,000-sq-ft open floorplates.
Mortenson, in partnership with Urban Development Partners, is developing the project and serving as design-builder, working with RSP architects, the designer. Completion of The Beam on Farmer is anticipated in July.
