As a new 1.1-km replacement in Genoa nears finish, collapsed bridge operator Autostrade per l'Italia and government agreed to provisional terms to nationalize the firm.
About 20 months after the 1.1-km-long Polcevera viaduct in Genoa, Italy, collapsed and caused 43 deaths, the last span of its replacement went up the week of April 27.
Authorities say incessant rainfall in northwest Italy caused a Nov. 24 landslide that took out a 65-ft section of the Madonna del Monte viaduct on the A6 highway, which connects Turin with the coastal city of Savona.
An overweight vehicle is thought to have caused the collapse early on Nov. 18 of a roughly 150-meter-long steelwork suspension bridge in Mirepoix-sur-Tarn, a French village 30 km northeast of Toulouse.
